If there’s one thing we know how to do in Malta, it’s throwing a super Village Festa. It’s a skill that we’ve perfected to an art because we get a lot of opportunities to practice. You see, with 300 days of sunshine, no less than 13 public (Bank) holidays and more than 60 village festas a year, for us, celebrating is simply second nature.
The majority of our village festas happen during the summer – between the months of June and September. During this time of year, religious processions, street decorations, local brass bands blaring, street parties pumping, and fire works blasting, are the rule of the day.
Village Festas form a huge part of Malta’s history and culture and whilst they’re all religious in origin, the festas in Malta and Gozo have also acquired a modern and secular side to them. Organised by the parish church with the help of local enthusiasts, the facade of the main church in the village is covered in hundreds of light bulbs, beautiful fireworks compete with nearby villages, as do rival bands, and night-time celebrations.
Activities start from days before the actual feast, with all towns and villages having their own program of events. These programmes can usually be found at the village parish or the band club (some of which have websites.)
Here’s a list of summer festas that we guarantee will leave you breathless. All of the locations mentioned below (except for Gozo) are less than a 20-minute car ride from the Valletta G-House. They are also easily accessible by busses that can be boarded just a few meters away from the house. Gambling legal in Canada
