Entertainment

It always pays to plan ahead as far as your evening entertainment should go, possibly even booking your tickets before the start of your holiday. I have included links to some of the places precisely for this reason as well as to give you the opportunity to see what's on.

With accommodation close to various cultural activities you can be sure to enjoy your stay and be spoilt for choice. The good thing is that all the places mentioned below are within walking distance from Valletta G-House so you can relax and take it easy. Start the evening off with a good theatre production or film and finish with an excellent meal in one of the various restaurants in Valletta.

St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity
Local architect Richard England was commissioned to transformed this ancient fortress into a centre for creativity. With a cinema, theatre, exhibition space and a music room St James has become a hub of activity. Here you can see up and coming local and foreign artists as well as sample some of the best local theatre. The cinema features European and World cinema that does not usually make it to the mainstream theatres. You can be sure of finding something here that takes your liking. Within walking distance of Valletta G-House, no need to worry about transport after the performance. More Info

Manoel Theatre
Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena  built the Manoel Theatre (see picture above) for the `honest entertainment of the people' in 1731. As one of the oldest theatres in Europe still in use, it is certainly worth visiting, not only for its architectural design, but also for its cultural history. Next door is the Theatre Museum. The Theatre runs guided tours at 10.30 and 11.30 from Monday to Friday and at 11.30 on Saturdays. Tickets are available from the Manoel Theatre Bookshop in Palazzo Bonici. The museum covers the rise and fall of the Manoel Theatre as the Royal Opera House prospered and was eventually destroyed during as air raid in World War II. The guided tours are conducted in English, French, Italian and German. The theatre’s programme is slightly more traditional than that at the St James Cavalier. Closes for the summer. (Approximately 15 minutes walk from Valletta G-House) More Info

Embassy Cinema Complex

Mediterranean Conference Centre
Constructed as a hospital in the late 16th century by the Order of the Knights of Malta, this historic building overlooks the breathtaking Grand Harbour. Apart from being the largest conference centre on the Island, it also hosts exhibitions and theatrical performances. On site is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Order of the Knights of St John. The Centre also accommodates another of Malta's cultural landmarks: a theatre dedicated to a sound and vision extravaganza of the long history of Malta called The Malta Experience. MCC is only a three-minute walk from Valletta G-House. More Info

The Royal Opera House
The old Opera House ruins are being restored and rebuilt to become an open air theatre as part of a Valletta project designed by Renzo Piano. The Royal Opera House was originally designed by British architect Edward Middleton Barry and erected in 1866. The theatre, along with the new parliament and the new Valletta Gate are to be ready by 2018 when Malta takes on the role of European Culture Capital.
